NBA Draft

The Minnesota Timberwolves are a desperate franchise. How else can a franschise justify drafting 4 point guards in the same draft. Kevin McHale did such a terrible job with the Timberwolves that new GM David Kahn didn't even consider drafting for need. Other teams are in a better position that they can draft a player at a position they need rather than taking the best player available. Take for instance the 76ers. They have an established point guard that took them to the playoffs the past couple years in Andre Miller. Miller is getting old though and they need a point guard of the future so they took Jrue Holliday. Miller can help develop Holliday and teach him the ins and outs of playing the position at the NBA level. They don't expect Holliday to play right away but in time he could be pretty good(personally I don't think Holliday will ever be better than a bench player but what do I know). This is the thinking of most NBA teams. Draft a player at a position they need help with. The Pacers did it by drafting Hansbrough to help on the boards. The Suns did it by drafting Earl Clark to help in the front court in a Shawn Marion type of roll. Teams have needs and the draft provides solutions for those needs. The TImberwolves do not have that luxury.
New York Knick GM Donnie Walsh recently said there is such thing as drafting "assets." Teams that have such huge holes on their roster that drafting a player to fit one of those holes just leaves all those other holes wide open. The Timberwolves are one of those teams. They have 3 postitions filled right now, Gomes at the 3, Love at 4 and Jefferson at 5. Other than that the team is wide open. This is why Kahn drafted the way he did. He knows that one or two players will not help, they need to dismantle the roster and start over. This is why he took Flynn and Rubio, the two best players still available when the T-Wolves picked. Kahn is thinking that getting the best players available will more likely lead to success in the long run. So what if they play the same position, they are BASKETBALL players. I cannot help help but support Kahn and the Timberwolves, I think he knows what he is doing.
